The story of Butterfly Lovers is a well known tale in China and has been passed down over the centuries ever since the Eastern Jin Dynasty (317-420). Like Romeo and Juliet to the westerners, the names of the two figures in the story are so familiar to the Chinese that we usually simply refer to this story as Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai. From one generation to the next, the story has been altered and new plots have been added through the media of popular storytelling and traditional opera. Content is in both Chinese and English.
